MULTIPLE PREGNANCY BY TRANSFER OF AN in vitro EMBRYO IN PREVIOUSLY INSEMINATED COWS

Abstract

In order to determine the effect of the site of placement of a second embryo in previously inseminated cows on the rate of pregnancy and double gestation, the present research work was carried out in the Animal Biotechnology Laboratory of the Instituto de Innovación Agropecuaria de Panamá (IDIAP). To do this, 20 multiparous females with different Brahman cross were selected, which were synchronized using a dose of 3 cc (0.75mg) of Cloprostenol (Lutaprost® 250, Pharmadix. Corp) deep intramuscular route. 48 hours after application, the females were inseminated while, at the same time, in the laboratory, the fertilization of the oocytes collected and matured in vitro, from post-mortem ovaries, was carried out. Seven days after insemination, the batch of inseminated cows was separated into two groups of 10 females and the embryos were transferred to them, in blastocyst stages. In the first group (T1), the ipsilateral embryo was placed in the corpus luteum (CL) (T1) and second group (T2) the collateral embryo was placed in the corpus luteum (T2). Confirmation of gestation was carried out at 30, 60 and 90 days after transfer, using a SonoVet 2000 ultrasound scanner (SV2000 Medison) with a linear transducer of 7.5Mhz. The results obtained indicated significant differences (p<0.05) for the site of placement of the embryo. The obtained information was analyzed using the Chi-square test with an alpha of 0.05. For T2, 70% of the embryos' survival was achieved, while for T1 only 30% was achieved. At 60 days, 57.1% of the females who received a collateral embryo to the CL presented double pregnancies and by 90 days 75% of them presented double pregnancies. Of the total number of double pregnancies in both groups, only 20% of them achieved a double birth. In conclusion, it is possible to induce double births by transferring a second embryo seven days after insemination in the bovine female.
