Eciton burchellii WESTWOOD, 1842 (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE: DORYLINAE): PEST OF APIARIES AND MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES

Keywords: Beekeeping, Eciton, marabunta, repellent plants, soldier ants.

Abstract

Legionary ants, soldier ants or marabunta, are the common names by which several species of the Dorylinae Subfamily (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are known, highlighting the species Eciton burchellii Westwood, 1842. There are multiple reports in America about the effects of these ants they occur in apiaries. In Panama, beneficiary beekeepers of the Apiculture Research and Innovation Project (PIIAP) reported attacks caused by these insects. The purpose of this work is to develop a systematic review on relevant aspects of E. burchellii, such as the damage it causes in hives and the management alternatives available. For this, 53 literary sources were consulted, addressing fundamental aspects such as taxonomic classification, biology, ecology, damage caused, apiary management, among others. The results showed that E. burchellii is present from Mexico to South America and in Panama it has been found in various locations where the PIIAP intervenes. The legionary behavior of this ant occurs frequently in the rainy season and is an adaptation to prey in groups; There may be cases in which said activity is modulated based on specialized predation. They are voracious insects, capable of ending a hive in a very short time. Management alternatives include the use of repellent plants such as neem and interrupting the paths through which ants travel. As a recommendation, the apiary should be inspected periodically and avoid spilling honey during the harvest, so as not to attract these and other possible pests.
